Asha Laaya - Farm Of Hope
In the fall of 2023 the Local Board of Administration of Alive Wesleyan Church was approached by and met with the leaders of Deaf New Americans advocacy group. The mission of their organization is to provide a safe space for Deaf New Americans to develop education, leadership and life skills without limitation in a way that honors their culture and traditions. They work to accommodate the needs of this community in which they can create their own barrier free future.
When we met with the "DNA" leaders our hearts were moved by the Holy Spirit who is clearly at work in our Deaf New American brothers and sisters in Christ. Therefore we decided that we would commit to pursuing a relationship with their organization by leasing the 10 acres of farmable land to them. We are in the beginning stages of this partnership now with the logistical preparations for the coming spring with the launch of "Asha Laaya" on our property in Kirkville which is the name of their farm meaning "farm of hope".
As we look to the future we wonder how God may use us to bless Deaf New Americans as a church. In Luke 4:18-19 Jesus reminds us that "The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." We at Alive Wesleyan Church want to be a part of blessing this world by embodying Jesus' words. He calls us to proclaim the good news and do good works in this world. We recognize that 'DNA' is doing great works in the Deaf community and we want to be a part of it.
